Dessert

Preheat the oven (375°F; or 350°F for chewier cookies).
Cream the butter with granulated and brown sugar in a large mixer bowl.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating until fully incorporated.
Add the vanilla extract and beat it into the mixture.
Sift together the dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, salt, and citrus peel) in a small bowl.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture in two parts, folding until just combined.
Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts, if using.
Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden brown, let stand 1 minute, then transfer to a wire rack to cool.
